EECOI - LGBTQ+ Supportive Language in EE
November 16, 2019 | 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Centro Latino Large Conference Room
1208 S 10th St
Tacoma, WA

EECOI invites you to attend a workshop for environmental educators who feel new to or unfamiliar with language and concepts related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and more (LGBTQ+) identities. The first half of the session will be an exploration of LGBTQ+ relevant terms and identities. Then, in the second half, we'll apply our learning to our own environmental education programs and teaching practices.

Part I: Queer 101

Folks who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community use terms that can be unfamiliar to people outside the community. What are those terms? What do they mean? The facilitators will walk through a number of LGBTQ+ related terms and ask learners to understand them through the lens of their own experience. There will also be plenty of time to ask questions in this safe and confidential setting.

Part II: Using LGBTQ+ Inclusive Language

Educators can unintentionally alienate LGBTQ+ learners when using certain terms for groups, individuals, and the concepts they teach. The facilitators will share an inclusive language guide that includes a number of alternatives for some of the most commonly-used phrases. We'll practice making the more inclusive language substitutions and leave plenty of time for discussion. Attendees will also have time to review their own programs, with the chance to consult with each other and the facilitators on questions they have about their own practice.
