Summary:

A funding cut to a summer lunch program for youth motivated longtime Tacoma resident Cinnamon Rosa to start her own lunch program. Driven at first to alleviate hunger, Cinnamon’s vision quickly grew through her constant outreach, bringing in new partners and new ideas. Now in its second year, she is expanding her activities to fight food insecurity, using a community-first approach that addressed deeper social and equity issues. This is part one of a three-part series to learn Cinnamon’s story and how her volunteer-led organization The Village Keepers is aligning with the work of the Just and Healthy Food System Community of Interest.

Summary: When standing on the bare muddy landing looking out at the thinned stand surrounding him, Tod Lemkuhl doesn’t miss the trees. Instead, he sees its future as growing into the forest he admires at Mt. Rainer National Park, with its large widely spaced trees, nurse logs, and diverse age classes. He and his wife, Gerie, readily admit that they consider themselves tree-huggers but, as they have learned over the past couple years, being tree-huggers and practicing active forest management are not exclusive. Instead, restoration through active management is a pathway to enjoying and rewilding the land while increasing its economic potential.
